December is "National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month"

For every year since 1981 December has been proclaimed "National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month". This helps to underscore the public's responsibility in preventing impaired driving and promoting the use of designated drivers and sober ride programs.

The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve is one of the busiest on the nation's roadways and also one of the most dangerous, due to a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic crashes. Sadly, Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death among youth ages 15-20.

While the decision to not get behind the wheel when intoxicated is an important one, we must also remember our responsibility to guide friends toward healthy decisions.

That's why my campaign is joining with New York and Suffolk County highway safety and law enforcement officials to remind everyone this holiday season to always designate a sober driver before each holiday party or event involving alcohol.

The road to safer communities begins with each of us and the responsible decisions we make.
